Art in Motion

‘Yoga, like art, returns you to your most naturalstate of being which is filled with riches . . .’

TeresaMurphy-Moore teachesyoga in Wicklow Town. Shetalks about how she had found a personal connection between art and yoga.

Yoga, for me, is a beautiful expression of artisticmeasures steeped in wisdom, as it reveals one’s inner landscape. I discoveredyoga as a teenager, but only committed to it ten years ago, making it part ofmy daily life.

Growingup surrounded by artistic influences and musical rhythms in nature, I wasalways seeking creative paths.  Initially, I had an artistic career in New York as a large events flower designer for the rich andfamous of Manhattan.  My clientsincluded Madonna, Whitney Houston and the Clintons - to name but a few. Then,by sheer serendipitous swerves in my life path, I returned to Ireland.  Throughsome divine (yet very natural) intervention, and after several trips to India where I immersed myself in extensive training, Ibecame a teacher of yoga.

Astudio owner (Yoga Shala) now for over four years, I teach daily classes, workshops and present the yoga teacher training aspect of my school.

AsI think back, what resonates with me is that I am still in a very artistic andcreative career, which has metamorphosed from The New York world of design tothe Indian yoga world, and back to County Wicklow - all quite effortlessly.

What'screative about yoga is its power through repetitive physical practice combinedwith rhythm of breath, self-exploration, energetic alignments, meditation andchanting, all of which re-introduce you to the riches inside. This to me is theartistic expression and language of the soul that I believe deepens the qualityof one’s existence.  It is not unlike theexperience when one engages with beautiful art, either by creating it orviewing it.

Inmodern life we have lost touch with our nature and the quality of how weexpress and know ourselves. Yoga, like art, returns you to your most naturalstate of being which is filled with riches. A stronger healthier body is a natural by-product of yoga.  But it is the bridging of our inner conflictsthrough the excavation work which can reveal all kinds of wonders and insightsabout ourselves. Life can become exciting again: full of newness andcreativity.

Thepractise of yoga is for everybody - all ages, creeds, gender and interests. Onecan begin at any stage of life. It is our inner artistic vision that expands whenwe view our life with fresh eyes.  As Iwatch my students practise their sequences of postures time after time, I see'art in motion' as each one expresses their essence in their own way, throughthe beauty of the posture:  aprovidential gift that is art that is yoga. Yoga is my art.
