Yoga and Healthy Eating

Yoga and Healthy Eating

Taking some wisdom from the ancient Ayurvedic system of healing classifies food
according to three types of gunas, or energies:

.Rajasic food is very
hot,bitter,sour.salty or dry.Examples include
chiles, chutney, pickles, tea, coffee, eggs chocolate.A yogic diet should limit or
exclude the intake of rajasic food because they over stimulate the mind and
body, and can cause mental stress and restlessness.

Tamasic food is
overcooked or processed food, which reduces flow of prana energy through the body
and produces lethargy and feelings of despondency.Examples of tamasic food
include, meat, alcohol, tobacco, onions, and garlic.A diet high in tamasic food
lowers the bodys resistance to disease.

Sattvic food is a pure,
wholesome diet of foods such as whole grain bread, fresh fruit juices, fresh or
dried fruit, seeds, nuts, honey, milk, and butter. These are foods identified as
being high in vital vitamins and minerals. They are also foods easily digested.A
diet high in sattvic food maintains the homeostasis of the body, calms and
purifies the mind, and increases energy levels. It is the diet that is the most
suitable for the serious yoga practitioner.

Yoga is a life style.
